A member of the English House of Commons who spent his long and honored political life fighting for the freedom and rights of slaves. A contemporary of John Newton and John Wesley, he tirelessly fought to end the transportation in overcrowded ships of black Africans to be sold as slaves in America. His outspoken criticism of those who profited by this inhumane trade eventually led to its end and the freedom of all slaves.
